Guest Post: Independence is a Choice - The Story Behind The Original AFO Assist®

Guest Post: Independence is a Choice - The Story Behind The Original AFO Assist®

At Lairos, we believe that high-end design must meet functional empowerment. We are proud to host a guest piece by Diane, a dedicated Occupational Therapist and the innovator behind The Original AFO Assist®. Diana shares our clinical DNA and our emotional mission: turning a medical necessity into a moment of dignity.

Here is Diana’s story, in her own words:

My journey to creating The Original AFO Assist® began where my heart has always been - working hands-on with individuals who need a little help with the essential tasks of daily dressing.

As an Occupational Therapist, I have had the privilege of supporting individuals of all ages across every care setting. I have navigated life alongside patients with varying abilities, all sharing one common challenge: the need for ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) to walk safely and securely.

Over the years, I witnessed a quiet, persistent frustration that stayed with me. It is the feeling that occurs when independence is slowly stripped away. Tasks that most people don’t think twice about - like putting on a sock, an AFO, and a shoe - can become daily reminders of loss, dependence, and diminished dignity.

Everything changed when a young stroke survivor and a college-bound young man with Cerebral Palsy challenged me to do better. Neither of them asked for "assistance" - they asked for independence. They wanted a way to put on their own AFO and shoe without relying on a caregiver or a parent. They wanted to start their day on their own terms.

I accepted their challenge, driven by the belief that true dignity begins with the ability to care for oneself.

At its core, The Original AFO Assist® is more than just a product. It is a promise - to honor independence, restore dignity, and support those determined to reclaim control over their daily lives.

I am thrilled to share this mission with brands like Lairos. We both know that the right tools - whether it is a specialized assistive device - are the building blocks of a life lived with confidence. Together, we are ensuring that children and adults alike can stand tall, move freely, and dress with pride.
