A Parent’s Guide to Summer AFO Socks and Managing Heat

Summer is full of outdoor play, park visits, and warm weather. But for children wearing Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) braces, rising temperatures bring a specific challenge: navigating the heat inside a rigid plastic shell.

If you are noticing your child sweating in AFO braces more than usual, you are not alone. While you cannot completely stop the sweating, establishing a smart summer routine and choosing the right summer AFO socks can make a significant difference in your child's daily comfort and skin health.

The Summer Challenge: Sweating in AFO Braces

The hard plastic of an AFO does not breathe. During the hot summer months, this creates a warm, enclosed microclimate around your child's lower leg and foot.

When sweat cannot evaporate, the skin remains damp. Prolonged exposure to trapped moisture can increase the risk of skin maceration (where the skin becomes overly softened and fragile). As medical resources on pressure injuries note, damp skin is significantly more vulnerable to friction, irritation, and pressure points. This is why managing moisture is the most critical part of summer brace wear.

Why You Should Never Skip the Sock

When it is 90 degrees outside, a parent's natural instinct might be to remove layers. You might wonder if your child can wear their braces bare-legged for a few hours to cool down.

The answer is always no. Wearing an AFO directly against bare skin removes the only protective barrier your child has. Without a sock, the hard plastic will rub directly against the skin, and sweat will pool inside the brace, increasing the risk of painful blisters. A high-quality, knee-high sock is absolutely essential year-round, but its role as a moisture manager becomes even more critical in the summer.

Choosing the Right Summer AFO Socks: Cotton vs. Synthetic

Not all socks handle heat equally. Standard "tube socks" are made primarily from synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. While durable, these fully synthetic materials often trap heat and moisture rather than letting the leg breathe.

For hot weather, a cotton-rich blend is the preferred choice for AFO socks for kids. Cotton is a natural, breathable fiber. Lairos socks are crafted from a 90% premium cotton and 10% spandex blend. This specific composition helps support exceptional breathability, allowing for better airflow while still providing the extreme stretch needed to fit smoothly over the heel and under the brace.

The Mid-Day Sock Swap

One of the most effective summer strategies is incredibly simple: the mid-day swap.

If your child is at summer camp, playing at the park, or simply having a highly active day, their socks will eventually absorb a significant amount of sweat. Packing an extra pair of breathable AFO socks and changing them halfway through the day gives your child a fresh, dry foundation. This simple reset can drastically reduce sensory frustration and help protect their skin from moisture-related irritation.

Increased Skin Checks

Because summer heat increases the risk of friction, you should increase the frequency of your skin checks.

Whenever you remove the braces - especially after a long day in the sun- check your child’s legs for red marks that do not fade as expected, unusually warm areas, or signs of increased rubbing. Catching these early allows you to address fit issues with your orthotist before they cause your child to refuse to wear their braces.

Comfort Meets Summer Fun

Summer should be about playing and making memories, not battling discomfort. By prioritizing breathable, cotton-rich socks, incorporating a mid-day swap, and keeping a close eye on the skin, you can help your child enjoy the season comfortably.
